Married secondly and morganatically in 1787 at Karlsruhe Louise Caroline Geyer von Geyersberg (*1768 Karlsruhe,+1820 Karlsruhe).

His issue who reigned:

-LOUIS I (*1763,+1830; son of Caroline),

-LEOPOLD (*1790,+1852; son of Louise Caroline).

Died in 1811 at Karlsruhe.

Buried in St Michael's Church at Pforzheim.

 

 

1811-1818: CHARLES (Karl)

Born in 1786 at Karlsruhe.

Father: Prince Karl Ludwig of Baden. Mother: Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt.

Married in 1806 in Paris Princess STEPHANIE de Beauharnais (*1789 Paris,+1860 Nice).

His issue who reigned: Josephine (*1813,+1900; Princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen).

Died in 1818 at Rastatt.

Buried together with his consort Grand Duchess Stephanie in St Michael's Church at Pforzheim.

 

 

1818-1830: LOUIS I (Ludwig I.)

Born in 1763 at Karlsruhe.

Father: Grand Duke Charles Frederick of Baden. Mother: Grand Duchess Caroline of Hesse-Darmstadt.

Unmarried.

Died in 1830 at Karlsruhe.

Buried firstly in the Stadtkirche in Karlsruhe, later reburied in the Grand Ducal Mausoleum in Karlsruhe.

 

 

1830-1852: LEOPOLD

Born in 1790 at Karlsruhe.

Father: Grand Duke Charles Frederick of Baden. Mother: Countess Louise Caroline.

Married in 1819 in Karlsruhe Princess SOPHIA of Sweden (*1801 Stockholm,+1865 Karlsruhe).

His issue who reigned:

-Alexandrine (*1820,+1904; Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha),

-LUDWIG II (*1824,+1858),

-FREDERICK I (*1826,+1907).

Died in 1852 at Karlsruhe.

Buried firstly with his consort Grand Duchess Sophia in the Stadtkirche in Karlsruhe, later they were reburied in the Grand Ducal Mausoleum in Karlsruhe.

 

 

1852-1856: LOUIS II (Ludwig II.)

Born in 1824 at Karlsruhe.

Father: Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. Mother: Grand Duchess Sophia of Sweden.

Unmarried.

Died in 1856 at Karlsruhe.

Buried firstly in the Stadtkirche in Karlsruhe, later reburied in the Grand Ducal Mausoleum in Karlsruhe.

 

 

1856-1907: FREDERICK I (Friedrich I.)

Born in 1826 at Karlsruhe.

Father: Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. Mother: Grand Duchess Sophia of Sweden.

Married in 1856 in Berlin Princess LOUISE of Prussia (*1838 Berlin,+1923 Baden Baden).

His issue who reigned:

-FREDERICK II (*1857,+1928),

-Victoria (*1862,+1930; Queen of Sweden).

Died in 1907 at Mainau.

Buried with his consort Grand Duchess Louise in the Grand Ducal Mausoleum at Karlsruhe.

 

 

1907-1918: FREDERICK II (Friedrich II.)

Born in 1857 at Karlsruhe.

Father: Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden. Mother: Grand Duchess Louise of Prussia.

Married in 1885 at Scholss Hohenburg, Bavaria Princess HILDA of Nassau (*1864 Biebrich,+1952 Badenweiler).

Abdicated in 1918.

Died in 1928 at Badenweiler.

Buried with his consort Grand Duchess Hilda in the Grand Ducal Mausoleum at Karlsruhe.

 

 

REPUBLIC OF GERMANY SINCE 1918

 

 

The vault of St Michael's Church in Pforzheim (Germany). The coffin of Grand Duke CHARLES is on the right marked by a crown on its top. His wife Grand Duchess STEPHANIE rests next to him in the dark green coffin of which only a fragment is visible on the extreme right. Grand Duke CHARLES FREDERICK is buried to the right of Grand Duke Charles's coffin. His coffin is not visible in the picture.

 

REGALIA OF BADEN

The regalia of Baden are kept in the former Grand Ducal Castle, now the Badisches Landesmuseum, in Karlsruhe and include:

 

-The Crown of Grand Dukes of Baden (1811), a corona clausa made of gold, silver and papier-mâché. It consists of an oval circlet with eight arches which intersect each other in the middle of the crown and are surmounted by an enamel globe with a cross. The crown is decorated with enamel and numerous gems including diamonds. It is a work of court jewellers Karl Wilhelm Dressler and Wolf.

 

-The Sceptre of Grand Dukes of Baden (1811), originally made in Transylvania in c. 1625, remodelled in 1811 when it was topped with a crown. Gold plated silver decorated with diamonds.

 

-The Sword of State (1811), originally made in 1729/1730 in Augsburg for the prince-bishop of Speyer by Johannes Biller. Remodelled in 1811. Goldplated and decorated with diamonds and other gems.

-The Throne of Grand Dukes of Baden (1838), made of linden wood and brass, goldplated.

 

The regalia of Baden were used mainly during funerals of deceased sovereigns.
