Born in 1753 at Prenzlau.

Father: Landgrave Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt. Mother: Caroline von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld.

Married in 1777 in Darmstadt LOUISE of Hesse-Darmstadt (*1761 Darmstadt,+1829 Auerbach).

His issue who reigned: LOUIS II (*1777,+1848).

Died in 1830 in Darmstadt.

Buried with his consort Grand Duchess Louise in the Old Mausoleum, Rosenhöhe Park, Darmstadt.

 

 

1830-1848: LOUIS II (Ludwig II.)

Born in 1777 at Darmstadt.

Father: Grand Duke Louis I of Hesse-Darmstadt. Mother: Grand Duchess Louise og Hesse-Darmstadt.

Married in 1804 in Karlsruhe Princess WILHELMINA of Baden (*1788 Karlsruhe,+1836 Darmstadt).

His issue who reigned:

-LOUIS III (*1806,+1877),

-Maximiliana (*1824,+1880; Empress of Russia).

Died in 1848 in Darmstadt.

Buried with his consort Grand Duchess Wilhelmina of Baden in the Old Mausoleum, Rosenhöhe Park, Darmstadt.

 

 

1848-1877: LOUIS III (Ludwig III.)

Born in 1806 at Darmstadt.

Father: Grand Duke Louis II of Hesse-Darmstadt. Mother: Grand Duchess Wilhelmina of Baden.

Married in 1833 in Munich Princess MATILDA of Bavaria (*1813 Augsburg,+1862 Darmstadt).

Died in 1877 at Seeheim.

Buried in the Old Mausoleum, Rosenhöhe Park, Darmstadt.

His consort Grand Duchess Matilda of Bavaria was buried in the Church of St Louis in Darmstadt.

 

 

1877-1892: LOUIS IV (Ludwig IV.)

Born in 1837 at Bessungen.

Father: Prince Karl of Hesse-Darmstadt. Mother: Princess Elisabeth of Prussia.

Married firstly in 1862 in Osborne House, Isle of Wight/England Princess ALICE of Great Britain (*1843 London,+1878 Darmstadt).

Married secondly and morganatically in 1884 in Darmstadt Countess Aleksandra Hutten-Czapska (*1854 Warsaw,+1941 Vevey). Marriage was annuled in 1884.

His issue who reigned:

-ERNEST LOUIS (*1868,+1937; son of Alice),

-Alice (*1872,+1918; Empress of Russia; daughter of Alice).

Died in 1892 in Darmstadt.

Buried with his consort Grand Duchess Alice of Great Britain in the New Mausoleum, Rosenhöhe Park, Darmstadt.

 

 

1892-1918: ERNEST LOUIS (Ernst Ludwig)

Born in 1868 at Darmstadt.

Father: Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse-Darmstadt. Mother: Grand Duchess Alice of Great Britain.

Married firstly in 1894 in Coburg Princess VICTORIA of Edinburgh (*1876 Malta,+1936 Amorbach). Divorced 1901.

Married secondly in 1905 in Darmstadt Princess ELEANOR of Solms (*1871 Lich,+1937 Steene near Ostende, Belgium).

Deposed in 1918.

Died in 1937 in Schloss Wolfsgarten.

Buried with his second consort Grand Duchess Eleanor of Solms in the cemetery near New Mausoleum, Rosenhöhe Park, Darmstadt.

His first consort Gr. Duchess Victoria had been buried firstly in the Ducal Crypt at Coburg. In 1995 she was reburied in St Peter and St Paul's Cathedral at St Petersburg, Russia.
