THE SICILIAN REGALIA

King Roger II of Sicily received a royal crown from the antipope Anacletus in 1130 and he was crowned with it in the same year in Palermo. Later the crown served at coronations of subsequent Sicilian kings. It disappeared in the early part of the 13th century. In 1735 a new crown was made for the coronation of Charles V in Palermo. Following the personal union of Naples and Sicily in 1735 it was kept in Naples. In 1796 when the French invaded the Kingdom of Naples, the royal family fled to Sicily. One of the ships carrying royal treasures was lost in the storm at sea and so was the Crown of Sicily.

The so called Crown of Queen Constance (early 13th c.) is kept at the Cathedral Treasury in Palermo. The crown was originally commissioned by King Frederick I Roger of Sicily who used it in his capacity as king of Sicily. In 1222, following his Queen Constance's death, the king placed his crown in her coffin. The crown was discovered in 1781 when the tomb of Queen Constance of Aragon had been opened. The crown is a copy of Byzantine imperial crowns and is made of gold and gilt silver. It is decorated with numerous pearls and gemstones.
